SHIFT The Girl Child Abuja
About:
Abuja is Nigeria’s capital and the eighth most populous city. It is a planned city built primarily in the 1980s in the country’s center, within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
As of 2015, the city had an annual growth rate of at least 35%, keeping it as the fastest-growing city on the African continent and one of the fastest-growing in the world.
Goal & Opportunity:
The city’s rapid growth has also resulted in significant social inequality. The center is highly developed, whereas some communities lack basic amenities. SHIFT met members of one of the remote communities, and one of the major issues discussed was a lack of education. Because the girl child was disproportionately affected by a lack of education, SHIFT decided to provide lessons to girls in the community in collaboration with community members.
Impact
SHIFT provided lessons to girls who did not have access to formal education.
